Breath For Health is a book, but it’s also a call for people to breathe in a better way, one that’s backed both by science and traditional knowledge. You may already be aware that you could be breathing in a better way. Or you are curious to know if there might be any gains in health, fitness and wellbeing you can make by improving your breathing. If so, my book Breath For Health can almost certainly help you.

Major physical issues aside, all of us have the potential for optimal breathing; it’s what we started out with in life. Infants breathe optimally by necessity. However, between early childhood and adult life, most of us encounter issues which affect our breathing patterns significantly. Working through the exercises in Breath For Health, taking just 10 minutes every day, you will be able to gradually restore that fully functional breathing which you developed early in life. You won’t need to buy any appliances or equipment. A yoga mat and a couple of foam blocks would be handy, but you could easily improvise.

I can promise you this thanks to my unique background. While working as a scientist, but taking an interest in yoga for the sake of my health and wellbeing, I stumbled across a school of yoga with a unique focus on effective breathing. Realising the value of this for myself and others, I went on to train as a yoga therapist within this tradition. My experience, gained from teaching others how to regain fitness, and my determination to optimise my own breathing, together with my capacity for scientific understanding of the role of the breath, has given me the knowledge and motivation to write Breath For Health – for your health.

I appreciate that you may be very cautious about embarking on some work with your breath – breath is precious. Please be assured that Breath For Health provides you with a detailed, step-by-step guide to better breathing and proceeds according to clear priorities. Sixty years ago, I was a tense, introspective teenager. If only a book like Breath For Health had been put into my hands back then.

The author of this book relies on the healing power of your breath and does not dispense medical advice or prescribe the use of any technique as a form of treatment for any particular physical, emotional, or medical problem without the advice of a physician, either directly or indirectly.
